    Registry

Can someone please explain to me what in the world the registry is??? I understand it to a certain extent, but I don't understand what programs like registry mechanic do. Heck, I have that program and it always finds fixes. But, what is the difference between that and easycleaner? What kind of things does registry mechanic fix?

    Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, fordman!

The registry is basically everything Windows. All of your programs/settings are stored in the registry, and sometimes nasty things suchas Spyware and Viruses. I found this definition:

A Windows 95, 98, and NT database of configuration settings, where information is stored concerning attached hardware, selected system options, memory setup, and available applications. It consists of the System.dat and User.dat files. When application programs are installed or uninstalled, Windows updates the registry automatically. Registry information can be kept on a server so that system policies can be managed centrally. You can access the registry through Control Panel in My Computer or by using the Properties menu option on the File menu. Remember, editing the registry is extremely dangerous, so take care when doing so.
The registry cleaning programs will "optimize" the registry, making your computer run faster to an extent. They normally remove things that it isn't required, such as programs that were removed but still exist in the registry, and sometimes will change a setting to make it faster. I believe Registry Mechanic is one of the best, and I personally love RegScrubXP as well. I hope that helps!
