If you have recently done the upgrade on AVG and have found that the Resident Shield or Email Scanner are not loading. Uninstall AVG, download the very latest copy to your desktop, or somewhere you remember on your C Drive.

When you have completely uninstalled AVG, run a search with "AVG" as your search criteria and delete anything that relates to AVG.

Empty out your Windows "Prefetch" as this will point to old registry data on AVG.

Reboot.

Install the new AVG.

Reboot.

Update the definitions.

Reboot.

Apologies for all the reboots, but this resets your registry.

AVG will then load all of it's core components. This is a known problem around on the net, and I recently had it myself, and this works.

It is good to get into the habit of rebooting every time your AVG updates definitions. This is recommended.
