"Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates announced that Windows AntiSpyware would be given to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) customers for free."

What if you don't have SP2 installed?

You may have to install it to get the advantage of it, or they may offer it in a package like they do all updates incase people don't want to upgrade to SP2.

From what I can ascertain, it will be a free download (including usage, updates, etcetera), for licensed users of W2K, NT4 and XP.

At the moment, it's free for all and sundry, with an option to 'validate' your copy of the aforementioned OS's.This is currently accomplished by an M$ procedure called 'Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool'. At some stage in the future, this will be a mandatory compliance procedure, prior to downloading.

I would imagine the users who downloaded M$ AntiSpyware, without initially validating, and try to update their version of the program will be 'found out' in that the 'validation' process will be incorporated in the update process .

And thus, why you should always use legal software! About the validation process can be read more here:

I installed Windows AntiSpyware and I'm liking it! There are 5,691 definitions installed. Hope that is correct. Yes, it found -0- problems!

When I attempted to download it, without first establishing that I had a valid copy of Windows...it was going to take over 1 hour to download, so I aborted. When I used the "validation tool", it said that my browser was not configured for it, so I had the option to enter my product key manually and get Windows validated that way. After Windows was validated, the download only took 20 minutes. (They did say that if your validate first, that your downloads from Microsoft will be faster).

I haven't done MS Update in months, but I did want to try this one out...And I'm liking it!

The only thing I didn't like is that it put Messenger back into my startups. Gone now.

Thanks for bring this up, JAZZ! If I have any problems or questions...I WILL BE TALKING TO YOU! LOL

Just a small point, I have Ad-Aware SE ( full paid version ) and SpyBot S&D installed. Will I have conflicts if I use M$S AntiSpyware as well. Everything on my machine works great, clean scans every time, don't want to spoil anything.

I doubt there will be any conflicts TDD. Ad-Aware and Spybot are well established programs, so Microsoft would not want to go 'upsetting the apple cart' by releasing a similar program that causes conflicts.
Most people would just uninstall Microsoft's version and stick with what they know works .

I have Ad-Aware 6 and Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard installed. Didn't notice a glitch at all. Like Vidster said "No Conflicts".
