Old Word Perfect 4.2 user wants to upgrade to something that will add numbers

I know, I know ... My old Word Perfect 4.2, which I'm still running under DOS, under Windows XP, has given me no reason to change. Except that I can't figure out how to send it via email when I need to. Also, I haven't figured out how to go in and "cut and paste" text out of it into something new, like gmail, when I need to. (There's probably a way.) Otherwise, I'd be perfectly content, 'cuz it still does what I want it to do.

The main feature it has that I love is that it can set up on tabs the ability to add numbers in columns, with or without a decimal. It'll do a subtotal, and then even grand total. I just don't know if there's any freeee software that'll do that. I checked out Wordpad, 'cuz it came with Windows XP, and don't see that feature, plus it doesn't even have a spell checker, so what the hell? Maybe it adds, couldn't fnd it, but really, no spell checker? And I thought I was in the dark ages.

I'd like to jump up to the Corel Word Perfect the world is running now, because it looks like the logical thing to do, but I haven't tried it out yet, and the only thing I did see was that if you tried it for free, someone said it held their docs hostage, that they couldn't get them back out, until they came back in and paid. Dang.

I've got a big doc I need to do this weekend, and would really love it if any of you could help out. I can't afford the $299, right now. Later, yes, right now, no.

    Anyone?

Hopefully you're a funny guy who can appreciate this dilemma. I thought of calling myself "Old Dinosaur", 'cuz I just love that adding feature in Word Perfect 4.2 and haven't found it, or felt the need to upgrade without it, but since the docs will have to travel email, I just need some help here ...

    Thanks!

    Greetings & Salutations.

If I understand correctly you need a file extension that is emailable and viewable?

If so perhaps this first app listed or one of the others might help:

Free Wordperfect Viewer Download - Free Download Free Wordperfect Viewer

I'm not sure ... in a perfect world, I'd never quit using my old Word Perfect 4.2 because it never crashes. But sometimes I need to email it when I'm done, and because it's old DOS format, even though I'm running it under Windows XP, I can't go in and "cut and paste" from the doc, or especially, can't find anything for free that would have that "cool" feature of adding numbers in columns when you tab over on an "align" tab.

Just haven't kept up. If there was a way to send it email and cut and paste out of it, I wouldn't switch. No need.

    Clear as mud?

From my above link this software appears to be free.

From my understanding it would convert your WordPerfect document into a "modern" format that you could then email.

For example as a PDF or a DOC that the recipient could open with Adobe or Word.

ABC Amber WordPerfect Converter Review and Download - ABC Amber WordPerfect Converter 1.05 at Office Suites & Tools of Business

ABC Amber WordPerfect Converter is an advanced utility which converts your WordPerfect files to any format you wish (PDF, HTML, CHM, RTF, HLP, DOC, and many more) easily and quickly. The software supports a batch conversion, a run from command line, more than 50 languages.Batch conversion ability allows you to convert a unlimited number of WordPerfect files at a time.As all ABC Amber products, it's really easy as ABC and powerful as Amber.
You could also try Open Office but their web site is down for maintenance until tomorrow:

Thanks for the sites. However, I went in, looked over a few that looked as though I might be able to view and convert docs to a format that would email, and some made it look as though I could take info from the doc and post it elsewhere, but then I went in to either get more info or download, and the thing each time took me to a security type program called "Ascendant", totally different. Why is that? Tried it three different times, with three different programs.

Not one to give up easily, after I tried both your links from your first post, and having no luck, as I was getting out I saw you had posted again, this time giving the link to ABC Amber Word Perfect Converter 1.05. So, of course, I clicked on that one too, and it took me back into the Ascendant site, which appears to be security across networked computers primarily, not what we're going for here. Is there something wrong with your site, or every program on the site you gave me? It is odd that it did it from the ABC Amber Word Perfect site that you posted as well. Any ideas? Thanks ...

Sorry, I was just posting untried links but I see what you mean. Looks like just a diversion to some other stuff.

I would try Open Office and see what it can do for you. I do have this program which is open source Linux and might be able to help. However as noted the site is down until the morning:

The maintenance is scheduled to conclude at 7:00AM PST Saturday morning. Please check back later.
