Can anyone figure out why will VLC hangs randomly while playing AVI files? the video freezes while the audio channel keeps on playing without interruptions. the latest k-lite pack of codecs is being used with default settings, with VLC.

This is the laptop specification

Mobile Intel Pentium 1.9Ghz
RAM 240 mb
C: 2.09gb free
D: 12.6gb free
WinXP sp2

The video is being played from a USB 2.0 drive, where the free space is over 200 GB.
The same video has previously played flawlessly on the same machine.

Why do you need K-lite for VLC? If I am not wrong, VLC has it's own decoders, so it's a standalone player. Maybe try uninstalling k-lite and see if the problem continues?

I was warned against using any of these 'codec-packs ' by users on other forums. So, I have only VLC, and
FFDShow + media player classic installed for video playback. It works nicely.
