Try the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. Read the instructions & remove any entries adobe related. I would try to remove all of them (reader, flash player, etc.) first from the windows add/remove to eliminate confusion & make sure you get rid of the problem. The utility might not delete the files but if successful v9 shouldn't think that its there but you should delete the folder in the program files afterwards. Another idea is to reinstall or repair v8 & then uninstall it.

Thanks townsbg- it worked successfully first time! I had tried various fixes from the adobe support pages and those from another similar help site to this one. All were so much more complicated, I felt I was reprogramming the software. I'd also considered downloading a couple of commercial fixes from unverified sources and was just about to pay to install a Regvac package. So many many thanks from another satisfied customer - I am now going to make a donation to your great site.
