    WMP11 Crashes all the time

I'm not sure what happened but my Windows Media Player 11 is crashing frequently. Whenever I click on the upper menus (File, View, Tools etc etc) it would just suddenly close. No crash report from XP (the "Send/Don't Send thingy) either. It just closes. And when I click on the tabs like Library or Now Playing it would just hang and after a long while close itself. No crash report either.

Reinstalling did not help. I'm a music junkie so I really need help =X

    Event Viewer
    --------------------------------------------------
Check your Event Viewer via Administrative Tools.

Open the System as well as Application tabs and look for red X errors that coincide with your problem. Details here:

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Basic information on Event Viewer errors can be found here: EventID.Net

Thanks Jeph for the help. Found the error and went to Event ID as well but I'm at a loss at what to do. EventID says it's some service I disabled but I'm not sure which one. I definitely did not disable anything myself. Here's the info, perhaps it would help?

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: DCOM
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 10005
    Date: 4/25/2008
    Time: 12:58:07 PM
    Description:
DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service upnphost with arguments "" in order to run the server:

Universal Plug and Play Device Host

WMP starts this service when it opens. The service should be set to Manual.

You will find this under: Administrative Tools > Services

There is a possibility that if this service is being altered it might be a virus or malware.

Something interesting, after turning on the Universal Plug and Play as some (and Jeph) recommended, the error in event viewer disappears but the crash remains.

edit: Oh thanks Jeph for the reply I was searching for a solution myself as well lol.

An Update. Problem fixed by unknown means.

I just moved Windows Media Player from the separate monitor to my laptop's monitor screen (dual view) and everything got back to normal. Clicking the "Files" area didn't result in a crash anymore.

    Thanks for the help jeph
