I use MediaCoder to change video formats.
The best format for uploading videos is:

* MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
* 640x480 resolution (* most updated recommendation)
* MP3 audio
* 30 frames per second

When I convert for example a avi file to mpeg - I end up with a garbled or soundless video.

What is the second best video format to upload to youtube?

Have you tried tmpeg encoder for this? Works perfectly for me.
