    Outlook in different locations

I use outlook out and about quite a lot.

My problem is that when I'm at home, I have to connect through my isp: ie. my outgoing mail server has to be mail.orangehome.co.uk, or smtp.orangehome.co.uk.

When I'm at uni, I have to change it to mail.shef.ac.uk

When I'm in a cafe, it has to become mail.googlemail.com

In other words, every time i go somewhere else i have to change the outgoing mail server manually for all of my different mail accounts.

    Is there a solution?
    Chris

how many different email adderess's are you checking?

If its more then 1 address, go into tools, accounts and add the account seperately, so that when outlook starts up, it will check each account, instead of you having to manually configure each account.

Once you have that setup, you can create filters to sort through your mail, and anything sent to "address1@domain.com" can be filtered to Inbox, "address2@domain.com" can be filtered to Work folder etc...

Also, is this for XP or Vista? I am assuming XP because you called it Outlook.

    its XP.

I'm checking 3 different accounts each time. They are the same accounts.
Its just the settings don't work when I'm home unless i change the outgoing mail server for each account to smtp.orangehome.co.uk -

ie. smtp.orangehome.co.uk for my google account, smtp.orangehome.co.uk for my diysheffield account, smtp.orangehome.co.uk for my shef email account.

But when im using a different network, the setting dont work unless i change the outgoing mail server for each one to its respective normal smtp/pop -

ie. smtp.googlemail.com for my google account, mail.diysheffield.co.uk for my diysheffield account, imap.shef.ac.uk for my shef email account.

So I have to manually change the settings each time i access outlook when im at home, and then again each time i go anywhere else. Do you see my problem?

I could set it up so i have six email accounts in outlook, 1 for each email with its normal smtp/pop, 1 for each with smtp.orangehome.co.uk - but then every single time I hit "send/recieve" I'm going to get 3 error messages about whichever account tries to access through the method that isn't allowed.

    Any ideas?

Ok, I kinda see your problem, but the odd thing is that your outgoing email setting is the same for all 3 accounts?? that has to be wrong. generally smtp.xxxx.xxx is a outgoing mail server, and each one should be different.

I think... emphasis on the Think... you need to setup 3 seperate mail account in Outlook. because you say you have a google, diysheffield, shef email account, which doesnt sound like the "same" email accounts.

I dont really follow the "I am checking 3 different accounts each time, they are the same accounts." Doesnt make sense to me, because you say you have a google, diysheffield, shef email account, which doesnt sound like the "same" email accounts.

i think you need to setup 3 different ones, and have them configured seperately, which is where you will have 3 seperate smtp.domanname.uk.co and 3 seperate pop3/mail.domainname.uk.co.

I run my work/home/hotmail account through Outlook express and have no issues, but i had to set them up all seperately.

If your using XP, I am unsure of the limit of email accounts your allowed to setup per profile, but setting up 3 should work fine.

    Check out your accounts..

So if you go to Tool-->Accounts, there should be a list of email accounts you have setup. Sometimes theres some default ones in there, but the "default" on is the one it always checks. If you are always manually configuring the same one, i think you dont have 3 email accounts setup, but just one thast you keep editing.

I have set up three accounts:

For example, with the googlemail one, when im on a wireless network away from home, it doesn't connect to the mail server unless the settings are like this:

But when I'm at home, my ISP(Orange Home) requires me to go through its servers, so outlook won't connect unless the settings are like this:

And its the same with all three accounts. Meaning I have to manually change the outgoing mail server for each account to smtp.orangehome.co.uk when im at home, and back to the alternate one when I'm away from home.

Do you get what I mean?

How can I get outlook to realise when im at home and connect via orange, and realise when im away from home and thus connect via the alternate there?

Do you use proxy settings for this PC?

Just want to clarify as well, i am still very confused, you are having problems with this e-mail address "yourname@googlemail.com" and when you move around from area to area you have to edit the smtp setting for this email address only? correct?

Check out this link to google mail trouble shooting, I dont use gmail, however, everywhere i check, even for the UK area, they say your smtp and pop accounts should be username@gmail.com, not username@googlemail.com, dont know if its goingto help you out or not but check out this link, they have a troubleshooter program too that might be helpful.

Heres another link from a post here at D-A-L that help clarify how gmail works, its a little brief but might help.

    No

I have to edit the settings for all three addresses:
ie. smtp.orangehome.co.uk for my google account, smtp.orangehome.co.uk for my diysheffield account, smtp.orangehome.co.uk for my shef email account.
    has to be altered to:
ie. smtp.googlemail.com for my google account, mail.diysheffield.co.uk for my diysheffield account, imap.shef.ac.uk for my shef email account.

The problem is not with google mail, its with all three. The problem is that my home connection requires me to use a different server...

Ok, I think i am understanding, kinda. I dont know how things work in the UK, but when you go to Uni and Cafe, are these places relatively close to your home? For instance do you know if they are different ISP's? I am going to assume that they are.

    Do you have SSL enabled?

    And hopefully 1 final clarification...

    3 Email address.... xxxxx@googlemail.com, xxxxx@diysheffield.co.uk and xxxxx@yourname.orangehome.co.uk right?

and when at home you have to use smtp.orangehome.co.uk for all 3 email accounts, but when you leave home you have to change them all over to different ones?

Also, when you try setting these up with the incorrect settings, and run the "test Settings" what error does it give you?

All, I talked to a few people @ work, and it seems that there really isnt a way around this, but a simpler solution might be to create 3 profiles, possibly labelled Home, Uni, Cafe, and then setup each email account accordingly that way, so when you are at various locations you just have to load a certain profile and then wont run into any errors while checking email. I guess this would be a last resort solution to your problem.
