Could someone please advise me of the best way to take music from a cd and convert it to a mp3 format so that i can play it on my Ipod. I'm looking for some free software if possible.

have you got WMP11 with that you can rip CD's into MP3 format

No sorry i dont have wmp11

if you've got XP with all the updates you can get WMP11 here

Also Winamp works great also and plus you don't need any windows updates to use it.
