When I run a full scan with Norton AntiVirus 2006 it only scans 486 files of my 1000+ files. I even tried it in Safe Mode but got the same result.

Norton its really bad... I recommend you Free Antivir. It's free (obviusly) in its smaller version, fast, not resources eater... and powerful. I used to have Norton '06 but is not worthy.

What happens when it gets to file 486? Does it freeze, crash, give you an error or just say that it has finished?

And, incidentally, have you noticed what file number 486 is? Could it be encrypted in some way so that Norton Anti-Virus can't access it and gets stuck?

If an Antivirus can't open a file, just let the file go and continue... but makes a report of that (usually called 'warning').
And what about a bad sector on the disk? that can 'cause it.

It just says that it has finished with no errors , and i don't know how to see which file it was scanning last.
