windows media player
hi my windows media player has stopped playing some of the video files which it has been playing till some 2 days back. Instead it is giving "error downloading codec". I've tried reinstalling the software again, but this didn't work. Can u help me with this. Thanks in advance.

What O/S are you running?
What WMP version are you using?
Are you experiencing any other download problems?

I'm using windows xp32 & wmp10. I don't want to upgrade it to wmp 11 for i like this one only. Plz help me with this. I don't have net connection with this system. & wmp 10 was playing those video files a week back & has suddenly stopped playing them. i'm not able to recall any changes i've done with the system inbetween. but i installed some video converters, will this help you.
Thank you

"Instead it is giving "error downloading codec"."
and
"I don't have net connection with this system."
I took the above (first) statement as codec download difficulty.
Indeed, one of the first things to check is the codecs. If you require some, then you'll have to use an Internet capable machine to download the ones you need and get them onto the problem machine for installation.
WMP 7.1, 9.x, 10, & XP codecs:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
And if needed, here are the WMP6.4 codecs: (As noted in the OVERVIEW (& Note) on the above download page)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
I'm assuming the file associations are OK as the player is asking for the above codecs for the requested file play.
Download and install the codecs and post back with your results.

hi but i told u that the same files were being played in the same computer until some 1 week ago. There was no net connection then also. Anyway I'll try ur suggestion and reply u back.

Yes, but as I stated in my last post, "the player is asking for the above codecs for the requested file play"

If you're intimating that you want to download the codecs from the link in your last post, I'd advise that you use the Microsoft codec package for Windows Media Player instead. (From the link(s) in my #4 post.)
If you've used the K-Lite Codec Pack 3.10 Full, Standard and Basic, that may be why your files no longer play in WMP. The Media Player outlined in that package is for Media Player Classic (latest build from Celtic_Druid).

the previous post was not mine. so i haven't installed that K lite codec pack.
as per ur suggestion i tried installing this wm9codec & also tried by upgrading wmp10 to wmp11 but both didn't work.
I have also noticed that it is playing *.wmv & *.mpg files but not *.avi files. Cld repairing the windows solve the problem. & if this could solve the problem can u tell me how can i go back to wmp10.

Sorry, I was going too fast to notice the different user name. ;>(
"Cld repairing the windows solve the problem."
If everything else is working OK then the problem is isolated to the WMP, and I wouldn't venture off into "repairing Windows" just yet.
"& if this could solve the problem can u tell me how can i go back to wmp10."
To return to an ealier WMP, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and remove the Windows Media Player x.x which is currently installed, then install WMP 10. Ensure ~all~ formats are chosen under the Options etc.
