    What is the error message?

Do you have the latest codec package for the WMP version you're running?

Is WMP associated with .avi files in the Options, File Types?

It is not displaying any error message now. It has just stopped displaying the video part of the avi files(audio part of the same file is getting played).
& i'm sure that i have the latest codec pack installed.
& the avi files are also associated with wmp.

    Are you running XP SP2?

What is the version of WMP you're using?

Have you tried uninstalling WMP, then a fresh install?

Do you have any other multimedia "players" or applications loaded? (ie Real Player, QuickTime, etc)

    I apologize for the delay.

If the file plays, with only the audio portion, it could be something to do with display options in either the player or Windows display. Can you look into this possibility and verify any display settings?

    Still researching.......

If you're comfortable editing the registry....

As you can see by the attached jpg, the WMP version is in this key:
    (I'm running version 11.)

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media]
    "Format"="11.0.0.5145"

You can delete the version key ("Format"="11.0.0.5145") and windows won't know what version exists, so it should take the WMP 10 version install.

Click the Start button, click Run. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.

Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus sign (+) next to SOFTWARE.
Click the plus sign (+) next to MICROSOFT.
Click the plus sign (+) next to WINDOWS MEDIA.

In the right hand pane, click on the Format string value ("Format"="11.0.0.5145"), to highlight it, click File in the upper left corner and choose: Export (this key).
Export to your Documents as a backup. If needed you can go back to this file and Import it back.

Once it's exported and saved, right click on it again and choose Delete.

Click File, and then click Exit. Restart the computer.

    Install WMP 10.

well it might happen sometimes that some WMP files are corrupt or they havent sufficeint codec, so u can try DivX codec , after installation u will be able to run avi files, and u can also use real player its also avaiable online

hi, even after deleting this reg info, it is giving the same message, "a higher version is detected and cannot continue with the installation.

Maybe i'm wrong in uninstalling the wmp. This is how i do it. In the add/remove pgms window, there is an option for add/remove windows components. I'ld click that and a new window containing windows components wld be displayed. I'ld unclick for WMP and then click next. Is this how it is done r there is some other way.

& were u able to find why it is not displaying the video part of avi files alone.
