    Word 2003 keeps shutting down

I have already asked for help, but the thread went dead as no one answered. I have reposted my problem anew, maybe there are some new people around who can help me.
Problem: When I edit a Word document it shuts down. Reinstallation didn't help. I converted the file into RTF format, but that didn't help either. So I kept the task manager open while editing my Word document and I noticed that whenever I changed something in the text or even after highlighting some paragraphs the CPU usage jumped to 100%, and if I kept editing the file it simply closed down with the error message. I used to edit such big Word files (200 pages) before, so the problem seems to have started some months ago and I have no idea about the reason: I ran adware removal programme, checked the disc for viruses as well (not to mention reinstalling the MS Office). So why does any change in a simple Word file take so much CPU? It shouldn't be 100% all the time I'm working with a Word file, right?

What other apps do you have running (even in the background/system tray)? Perhaps disabling everything you can from startup (start>run>msconfig>Startup) aren rebooting might be a good idea... it's a case of whittling down the possible causes.

Thanks for advice. I did try to uncheck all the startup programs, but alas, it didn't help.

Sadly, sometimes there is no apparent answer. With the installation of other software incompatabilities do often cause heartache with no option but a complete reinstall. I do this annually myself, bit like a spring clean. Not the answer you're looking for but it gives you a chance to start anew and clear out all the old rubbish that accrues in the registry

Thanks to everybody who's kept coming up with their suggestions in both threads. I've done a thorough clean-up, getting rid of some programs (proofreaders and dictionaries) which most probably began to interfere with the Word. A week has passed, and I haven't had any problems so far. Cheers!

    Hi there,

Yes, the clean up solved the problem. I haven't experienced any inconvenience with the Word since.
