Quicktime no longer works, whenever I try to either view a clip/picture or open the program I get error messages. Here is one of them:

An excetion occurred while trying to run C\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\Quicktime.cpl",QuickTime

How can I sort this out?

Tried uninstall but this tells me that if associated files are removed other applications might no longer work.

Uninstalling QuickTime will not cause any problems so long as you are going to re-install it again afterwards. This is your most straightforward option
