    Question Norton has exclamation point

Running XP with Office 2000 Pro, plus Norton Corporate on network. One machine keeps showing the exclamation point on the NAV shield icon in the sys tray. Other machines rarely have this occur, but deleting the items in quarantine seems to take care of it. Not the case with this machine, so the exclamation point is almost always there. Any ideas?

yep .. simply log onto www.symantec.com and click downloads > then virus definition updates > then Download Virus Definitions (Intelligent Updater Only) > then click on the download updates button.

after downloaded run the update then restart the pc .. and the exclamation mark will disappear !

Ours are all set up as managed clients, so updates are automatically downloaded to the server which then pushes it out to all individual PCs. So it doesn't seem that downloading this to the PC will do anything. (Please correct me if you know differently!) When we open NAV, it says the most recent updates have been applied and the Automatic Update button is grayed out.

I have had this happen to other systems also...try going into your service manager and stop and start the program several times. Sometimes it may say that the virus definitions are updated, but they may not be installed correctly. This mainly applies to the NAVROAM feature for Norton.

Yes ... updates should download off the server automatically but it sometimes doesn't happen. Just try downloading the update and i bet the exclamation point will disappear, I used to work with IBM in canberra and the department I supported has NAV corporate .... and about 100 or so pc's wouldn't update !

I had the same problem, tried the updater theory --no go!, but I did find this link on Symantec: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...rc=bar_sch_nam

In case it move this is essentially it: Situation:
You upgraded to Symantec AntiVirus 9.x and notice that your client has a yellow exclamation mark in the Symantec System Center. Realtime Protection on the client seems to be working and the virus definitions are updating properly.

    Solution:
Double check to ensure Realtime Protection is running on the client.

To make sure Realtime Protection is running

    1. Open the Windows task manager:
    * For Windows XP/2000: Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on your keyboard, and then click Task Manager.
    * For Windows 98/ME: Press Ctrl+ Alt + Delete on your keyboard.
    2. Look for RtvScan.exe (if you are using Windows XP/2000 look on the Processes tab). If RtvScan.exe is not running, please follow the steps in the document Error: "Symantec AntiVirus Realtime Protection failed to load" after installing Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8. If RtvScan.exe is running, go to step 3.
    3. Go to the Eicar Web site and click the link The AntiVirus test file eicar.com.
    4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click eicar.com. A Realtime Protection warning should appear.
    5. In the Symantec System Center right-click the client with the yellow exclamation point, then click All Tasks > Symantec AntiVirus > Clear Threat Status.

    It WORKED!
