Advice Needed on Getting Best Quality Pictures & Sound from VHS

Hi. I was wondering if someone could give me some advice. I've got loads of old VHS tapes that I want to transfer to DVD (as much to free up some space as anything). I'm fully aware that I'm not going to improve the quality when I transfer to DVD, but would like to the footage to be as good as the original tape (if possible) once I've transferred it to DVD. I've already transferred some footage and the quality has been pretty poor. Has anyone got any tips on how to improve picture & audio quality? I'll list what I'm using in case it helps:

Advent T9100 (see http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/pc/t9100.htm for specs)
    ArcSoft Showbiz to capture video
    Sonic MyDVD to create/burn DVDs
VCR plugged into the sockets at the back of the PC (scart plug in VCR; phono plugs into the PC).

I'd be very grateful for any help.

    Hi Mshergold,
You are probably doing the worst thing possible and taking up much much more time than is necessary.
IMHO your best bet is to NOT use a PC method at all but to buy a set-top DVD recorder then connect your VCR directly to it and record directly to DVD.
You will get good quality mpeg conversion if you buy a decent recorder and will save aeons of time and effort.
    HTH,
    Regards.

Thanks Ford Prefect. I'll consider that avenue instead.
