    Problems with Outlook 2000

    Hi,
I just started using Outlook 2000. I've never used any of the Outlook versions before, but would like to give this a try.

Right away I have a few questions.

    * In outlook Express, I liked the auto-complete feature for the addresses I wished to enter. I can't seem to find a way to configure this in Outlook 2K.

    * In OE, we were using two identities as we had two users, each with their own e-mail address. When we clicked on the OE icon, it would bring up the Identity Window, where we could select the identity we wished to open up, and Send, Receive etc.
Now, in Outlook 2K, I can't find any way to configure separate identities. When I try to use the Help files, there really isn't any response for the word identity; at least nothing at all concerning setting up separate identities.
I understand that I could set up multiple accounts, but I want to actually have the separate Identity.

    * I would also like to be able to change the size of the text I am viewing the e-mails with. In OE, that was fairly easy to adjust, but in Outlook 2K....you guessed it, I can't find the configuration for that.

    * Added 05/26/2006
Now I have to add something else. Several times Outlook 2K has locked up when opened. I haven't been able to shut it down normally, but have had to either force a restart of the system, or use the Task Manager and shut it off that way.
It does send an error report to Microsoft, but when I looked at the details, it just said that the only solution was to upgrade to Office 2003, as there is no longer support of this product.
I am guessing that there must be something else that could be done?

    * After some checking on the web, I see that I should have Manage Identities under the File heading. It's not there. Do I need to try reinstalling?

    Help will certainly be appreciated.

    Thanks, (again)

    Clayton

    Hi Clayton,

I'm at home at the moment but I use Outlook 2000 at work so I'm going to try and remember the menu options without actually seeing it!

Email address lookup: Outlook will match what you type in against certain address books and lists. The lists that it uses depends on how it is set up - it will be different for you at home compared to how it would be for most people in an office environment. I think that you'll find the setting under Tools > Options.

Identities: I've never noticed a 'Manage Identities' menu item in Outlook 2000. I'm not saying it's definitely not there .... but I've never noticed it. Outlook generally gets user information, etc. in a different way to Outlook Express. It uses MAPI profiles. You should see a Mail or Mail Profiles option in the Windows Control Panel. You set up each different user as a different profile. Then, in Outlook, go to Tools > Options. There is a setting that allows you to specify one particular profile to use every time that Outlook starts. Different Windows user accounts can default to their own Outlook profile but, if you all log on as the same user, this setting is no good for you. So, instead, you can choose for Outlook to ask you which profile to use each time that you start Outlook.

Email text size: Again, I've never seen this option.

Bear in mind that Outlook is designed for business users on a network and primarily those with a Microsoft Exchange email server. You won't have that at home. I've been running a network that uses Outlook and Exchange Server for the last 6 or 7 years. Yet, despite this experience, I've just set up my own small business and I'm still using Outlook Express because I actually find it a lot more flexible if all that you want to do is manage emails. If you want calendars and meeting requests, etc., then Outlook is great for that. But, for emails, you're probably better off sticking with Outlook Express.

    Hope that helps
