    Getting video on computer

Hello, I am fairly new to D-A-L, and I bet there are probably 100 posts on this, I just can't seem to find any. Here's my problem. I have a school project due tomorrow (yes saturday) and I just borrowed a friends Sony Handycam DCR-DVD301 recorder. My question is...how do I get the video from the camera to the computer? Does USB not work? Every time i try to capture the video on my computer while the camera is hooked up to the computer (USB), it says that it can't find the device. Do I have to use a special cord, or are there any free downloads that would allow me to capture the video onto my computer. Please help QUICK...would be VERY appreciated.

Video cameras usually download footage to a PC using a Firewire (IEEE 1394) connection which needs a special cable and appropriate 1394 port on the PC.
Some can download via USB, but usually (not always) this is for photos, not video.
    Do you have firewire?
    Regards.
