are they saved in My Documents ....My Received Files?
-
No, cant find them there
-
What messengers exactly?
The options would be within the messengers.
To save or not to save. And where they are saved etc.
-
Yep, I think he's referring to "chat logging". If you don't find anything in your My Documents folder, then it's safe to say you haven't enabled such options in your messengers.

Thanks for the replies guys
What i mean is do they leave traces on your computer forever? I saw somebody on tv the other day finding old messages on another persons comp, which i presumed were in the memory. If so this must slow it down so i was wanting to find them and delete them. Maybe they had enabled archiving on their messenger so thats how they did it.
Thanks

with the right software anything that written to your hard drive can be retrieved

This is a good general cleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/
This one will delete .dat files as well (for free):

If you have not chosen to save chat logs then there would be no easy way to find any data.
But as brain_damage points out anyone with the right tools can find anything.
A sledge hammer and a large body of salt water are the best to completely clean a drive.
