I’m not sure if this is in the right spot but here it goes. How do I burn a 700mb avi file of home videos to a DVD or VCD so that I can play it on my DVD player?
Thanks

Do you have DVD burning software?
If so you should have the option to burn to DVD.
Some program is usually shipped with a DVD drive.
XP in itself does not have this ability.

I have video vault to copy/ backup DVDs but I can’t import any files with that b/c it takes like 10 hours to import it as a divx file and if I import it as a DVD format it locks up. What are some other programs or methods that I can use/try?
Thanks

Hello,
1st, you should think about purchasing a complete version of Nero, this will allow you to do loads of cool things like import many different file types divx, xvid, mpeg etc. and will convert them to DVD, VCD etc. it allows you to make simple menus and has an extremly easy to use interface, a few clicks and your off. Nero also does a whole plethora of other audio/visual tasks too numerous to list here, I would fully recommend it for someone who wants to get into creating your own DVD's as a starting point, plus if you go on to more advanced techniques you will find you still use Nero on a daily basis for backing up, burning etc. Have a look at this: Nero 7
Download a free trial version and let us know what you think
Now if you are serious about producing proffesional looking DVD's then you need to read up about converting AVI files to VOBs (DVD files) then using a pro software to create real menus, compile VOBs so you can burn it in Nero.
http://www.afterdawn.com/
This is where I learnt how to do alll kinds of cool video related stuff, the list is endless, they have a great forum and guides section but seeing as you are new to this kind of stuff I'll point you in the right direction (VOB's, codecs, divx, ifos its all very confusing when you start out isn't it! Don't worry your'll get it and if you don't feel free to post either here (DAL) or over at Afterdawn, the great thing about Dal and Afterdawn as a noobie I never got flamed, Ive learnt a lot from these 2 sites but believe me its not the same everywhere VideoHelp! I felt was a bit to techie for me starting out)
For converting a AVI file to DVD read this
For pro looking menus I cannot recommend DVDLab Pro enough its amazing! Animated menus slideshows, proper stuff youll need to convert your avi before using the above method as it hasn't got a built in converter but when you get using this software and understand the effects it can produce you'll understand why its so brilliant!
DVDLab
One thing before I go, you have to remember that video encoding can take a long time! I used to have a P3 and creating a DVD from an AVI would take 10 to 15 hours, I'd have to start it before I went to bed and hope t didn't crash in the night. Now I have a 3gig P4 it takes about 1 to 3 hours worse case.
Ok mate hope this waffle has been of some use and wish you all the best in getting your stuff onto DVD

Hi Matt,
700MB of avi file isn't very long, probably only a few minutes if it's high quality.
Anyway, the answer is that you need a video editing program which includes a DVD authoring section, or a separate DVD Authoring program.
Either will enable you to make DVDs or video CDs which you can then play in a DVD player.
Do you have any such progs or do you want me to recommend one?
Regards.
