EMERGENCY!!! Microsoft WORD not Working!!
Sorry- this is an emergency! I use Microsoft word for all my computing work- now it wont open! I recetly installed a few programs to clena a virus that had infected my pc (AVG, regprot, and HJT). After cleaning my PC, upon startup a Windwos Installer window pops up claimimng to install Microsoft Home Publishing 2000- however, an eror message pops up at the end saying the CD was not found to complete the installation of MHP2000- which is really odd because it worked fine on my PC before the cleaning. After I started getting this weird installation failure message, Microsoft Word stopped working. The Microsoft Works Task Menu will start but nothing else- I just need Word to start working again!!!! Please HELP!!!
-
By the way- I am running Windows ME on my pC. Also, Microsoft Word will start up in Safe mode, when i select to start it in safe mode after i get a message saying "word failed to open last time. Would you like to open it in safe mode?"

You could try a System Restore. Unsure if it would work but might be worth a try.
Also:
From Works or Word in Safe Mode can you click the toolbar: Help | Detect and Repair?
Do you have a Works CD?

well, i cleaned up/erased the system restore after i did the pc cleaning. unortunately i do NOT have the works cd. sorry!

Did Detect and Repair work? If the temporary install files have been erased it requires the CD.
Despite the inconvenience does Word work OK in Safe Mode?
If Works was pre-installed on the computer one of your restore disks might work.
Do you know what disks came with the PC? Who is the manufacturer? What is the model?

Sounds like you're running Microsoft Works Suite 2000, which is a compilation of Works, Word, Home Publishing and some other Microsoft programs in a bundle of several CDs. The virus that you had must have targeted some of the files that these programs need and it seems that removing the virus has also deleted those files because they were infected.
As Jephree said, you may be able to get the installation files off of your computer's restore CDs without necessarily having to restore everything.

I wonder?
I really don't know what I'm talking about here, so this is a question for the people who do.
Windows itself can be non-destructively reinstalled from .cab files stored on the HD (C:\Windows\Options\Cabs). Is there any possibility that M$ Office/Works could be salvaged in a similar way?
Like I said, just a thought.

Possibly but only if you know where those CAB files are. Seems unlikely though as the installer has been asking for the CD, which suggests that it hasn't cached local copies of the CAB files onto your hard disk. That is, perhaps, not that surprising as Works Suite is such a large package (taking up several installation CDs).
