Router Word Document Sharing Issues
Hi. I am running WIndows XP Home ed. My second PC is running Windows ME. I recently bought andinstalled a wired ethernet broadband router. the internet connection for both computers works fine. for the most part, the file sharing works fine. Any media i have saved on one computer will play on windows media player on the other computer. However- my word documents that I have saved on my second PC (windows me) will not open on my new computer (XP). When i try openeing them through the router connection, i get a message saying "the domain or file name is invalid". however, when i choose to "send" the document to m new computer's "my documents folder", then the file opens and reads perfectly fine. is there a way i can open files directly using the router connection and not having to save the document first to my computer and then openeing it? My router is a D-Link DI-604. Thanks.

Hi. I am running WIndows XP Home ed. on my computer (Comp. "a") My second PC is running Windows ME (comp "b"). I recently bought andinstalled a wired ethernet broadband router- a D-Link DI-604. the internet connection for both computers works fine. for the most part, the file sharing across the network between the the 2 pc's (comp a & b) works fine. Any a/v media i have saved on one computer will play on windows media player on the other computer (from a to b works fine and so does from b to a). However- my word documents that I have saved on my second PC (comp. b~ windows me) will not open on my new computer (comp. a~ XP). When i try openeing them through the router connection, i get an error message saying "the domain or file name is invalid". however, when i choose to "send" the document (located originally on comp. b) to my new computer's (comp. a) "my documents folder", saving it to the hard drive of my new PC (comp. a), THEN the file opens and reads perfectly fine. is there a way i can open files directly using the router connection and NOT having to save the document first to my computer (comp. a) and then opening it? When I try opening documents from my new pc (comp. a) on my old pc (comp. b) using only the router connection and no saving, the files work fine. It is only my new pc (comp. a) that i have problems with. Any assistance would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thanks.

Are both PCs running the same versions of Microsoft Word? What version(s) are they using?
-
I dont know. All i know is the OS. How can I check?
-
When you start Word, the 'splash screen' will say Microsoft Word 97, or Word 2000, or Word 2002 or Word 2003. If it comes up so quick that you can't read it, then you can go to 'About Word' on the Help menu in Word. There should be a version number in there.

my PC running Windows ME (comp. b) uses word v. 2002. My PC running windows XP (comp. a) has word v.2003. if the version difference is the problem, how can comp. b read comp. a's documents but not vice-cersa?

comp A's word 2003 should have an option to import older word version - it's quite a fussy bloated version unfortunately. In other words, you would need to save comp B's letter onto comp A and then import it into Word 2003
Pants huh
