Windows 2003 Backup doesn't back up

I'm using Windows' own Backup program to backup my Windows 2003 server onto DDS4 tape each night and it does fit comfortably onto a single tape with lots of room left over. I've got a different scheduled job for each day of the week (Monday to Friday) and I've set them to reoccur every week. They ran at the right time in the first week I made each of them but, when they moved on to the following week, they stopped running automatically. If I go into the schedule calendar, edit the job and add another schedule entry to run "now", then the backup starts, runs, verifies and completes as normal. But it's not happening automatically at midnight every night as it's supposed to. Anyone got any ideas?

P.S. I did Google for it but didn't find much that was of use at first glance.

I've still got this problem. And, in fact, it is now worse. Even if I add another entry to the schedule, it doesn't work. Every day, I now have to go into the schedule, DELETE the backup scheduled for tonight and then re-create it. As I said before, the first time it's due to run, it works OK. It's just that it doesn't run the same time next week (although it appears in the scheduler).

I've got in the back of my mind that it might be a logon issue, though I don't really know why I think that as I'm running the backup jobs as the domain administrator.

PLEEEEASE, does anyone have any ideas?

I like to search & will continue to... At first glance I find these pages:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...tomatic+Backup

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...up&btnG=Search

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...up&btnG=Search

Is this last issue similar to yours?

I agree with the first post here, the major problem with this backup software is the inability to schedule a backup with ease. If you for example schedule a daily back up, the backup will only occur IF the media described in the backup is still there. If you change the tape, then you have to adjust the job. As a consultant to a few small offices, ease of use is important for the users. They should be able to switch the tapes without having to adjust the backup properties.

Thanks for that Jephree. Yes, I had read that TechRepublic article (and all the complaints about it!) earlier on. My issue is kind of similar to that, except that I've now individually named each of my tapes and cycle them in the standard method:

    Monday
    Tuesday
    Wednesday
    Thursday
    Week1
    Week2
    Week3
    Week4
    June
    July

    etc.

So, when Monday's job is completed successfully and rescheduled for the following Monday, the name of the media, as far as I can tell, is still Monday. That's why I can't understand what the cause of the problem is. There's media there and I've told it to use media with the correct name (apparently) and I'm logging on as the domain admin so you can't get much better than that. As far as I remember though, I think it does work if I use a new tape and save the scheduled job to use a new tape each time. But, if that's the solution, my boss will have a heart-attack when I tell him the budget that I need for DDS5 backup tapes - they ain't cheap !!

    Hi

I signed up to this web site so I can show you how you can work arround it, coz I am searching for the same answer myself. I have similar problem too, my schedule jobs stop after a restart. I am assumng this happns to all servers.

I run windows server 2003 and need to do a regular backup of it. I have scheduled tasks like you have done and ended up with few question marks on my head when the server was restarted.

Whe you create a schedule job it makes a little *.bks file and it will be called friday.bks if the backup job is called friday. This file is used as refrence when backup runs.

    THIS IS THE TRICKY BIT.

These *.bks files are stored in "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data". As you can see that is a temp directory ( YES<< that's is "STUPID"). When you restart your server it deletes the WindowsNT directory, so any other folders in there gets deleted and those *.bks files too.

So what I have done is copied the folder called Windows NT and put it on desktop while it has all the other files and folders in it for backup to run. Everytime I restart the server I copy the Windows NT folder and paste it into C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft so it has all the *.bks files i created previously and the addition directories it needs with it too.

I have been pulling my hair out at this "STUPIDITY" of Microsoft and having to live with it. I am running a Server 2003 Standard, so the SR 2 may have this fixed.

I know this will not fix your problem but I hope this helps you a little and make it easier to set those schedule job going when you restart your server.

If you find a permenent solution to this please e-mail it to me at khancc@hotmail.com and I will keep posting if I find any more people with question marks on their head

    Thanks for your time

I ended up swapping out the tape drive and all my backup problems seem to be resolved now. The annoying thing is that Dell had already been in and replaced the tape drive, SCSI card and cable so I had actually got TWO duff ones! I swapped the PowerVault 110T tape drive (same model) out of a newer Dell PowerEdge server and everything seems to be fine now

I'm running Windows 2003 RTM as Dell have advised me that their drivers have problems with 2003 SP1 !
