    Word functions desperately slow!!

I have a Canon Smartbase MP370 operating under Win XP Pro and Office 2000 Small Business and Professional Upgrade. When I try to use any of the functions from the FILE, FORMAT and HELP drop down menus (e.g. Print, Page Setup, Print Preview etc.) within Word it can take between 20-30 secs to respond. This does not happen with any of the other Office applications. I have re-installed drivers for MP 370 from my original CD and from Canon’s web site and I have also re-loaded Office, but the fault remains. I have entered the question on Microsoft's site, but they believe it to be a printer driver error. I have also tested each stage of the installation process. Having loaded MP Drivers and MP toolbox, without connecting the printer to the PC, all is fine and Word works as it should. As soon as I connect the printer to the PC, via the USB, the computer recognises the new hardware, but when I go into Word the same issues detailed above re-appear. When I tested my system with another printer Word is fine so I can only assume the problem must lie with my Canon MP370.
    Any ideas welcome!!

I assume the drivers you got from the Canon website were the latest drivers? Is the printer still under warranty? If so, raise it with Canon and see if they can put out an update to fix it.
Am beginning to see a lot of people having problems with multifunction printers.

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes I have posted the issue with Canon, but no reply as yet. The printer is still under warranty. I had a Xerox multifunctional for a few years and that was ok until age took over and started to have issues when I upgraded to XP from 2000 Pro.

Might also be worth going to your motherboard manufacturer's web site in case there are updated USB drivers for your PC - might be a conflict that they've found and resolved.

Spent a very frustrating day trying to track down any updates as per your suggestion. Intel does not seem to recognise my product!! If I understood you correctly I should be looking for any revised drivers to my USB controller which is as follows:

Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D4 (there are variations on the 24D4 suffix with the same date and driver version)

    Driver Version: 5.00.1006
    Driver Date: 01/15/2003

Am I correct in interpreting your suggestion - would you recommend
    www.drivershq.com/
who claim to find drives on your system and find the updates ($29 one off fee)

Again my thanks in helping this never ending struggle. Canon are NOT proving helpful. Have been promised a call, but nothing as yet.

I've never had to pay for drivers before (I hadn't heard of the Drivershq.com service). I believe that www.DriverGuide.com (who many of us use) have a tool that you can download that will scan for updates ... but they won't charge you for it.

Did you try your motherboard manufacturer's web site .... or were you talking about the Intel site because it's an Intel board?

I have tried both MSI (Motherboard) and Intel (UBS Host Contoller). It would appear I have the most up-to-date drivers. I rang Canon in the end, but they were unable to help. They tried a few ideas, but to no avail. From their point of view the fact their printer works ok with my laptop, running on Win 2k, is evidence that the problem is not with Canon. I have now contacted Microsoft for their view. I have also sent off for a "trial version" of Office 2003 just to see if the problem happens in Word 2003 as well. If it does the issue might then lie with XP. Very frustrating! Thanks again for your patience and advice- much appreciated believe me.
