Hahah, that's a popular misconception that people have. Here's the definition of the word explained in more detail.

    II. Defining 'Noob'
Contrary to the belief of many, a noob/n00b and a newbie/newb are not the same thing. Newbs are those who are new to some task* and are very beginner at it, possibly a little overconfident about it, but they are willing to learn and fix their errors to move out of that stage. n00bs, on the other hand, know little and have no will to learn any more. They expect people to do the work for them and then expect to get praised about it, and make up a unique species of their own. It is the latter we will study in this guide so that the reader is prepared to encounter them in the wild if needed.

Well, if you follow that particular definition the word "noob" can actually be used outside of gaming. It may have originated from gaming, however the definition merely states that a "noob" is a person that knows little, have no interest in knowing more, and expect praise from other people's work. It didn't mention gaming at all.

However, there are multiple views on the word "noob" so it's really quite hard to define it accurately. Particularly because it's a slang word.

Well i don't hear it that much anyway. The last time i was called a noob was about a year ago and until now i'd forgotten all about that word. Maybe you two hear more about it than i do because you probably speak more slang? I don't know, i don't...

So, Paul, when did it start to bug you? I just find it a little word that annoying people use when they want to look good infront of others... which isn't that often btw... Hmm, i used to play games in the DAL arcade, but now that it's gone, i don't. Quite sad actually.

Lol, sounds like you're dissing the Stratforders now Why don't you just ask him why he uses it so much? He probably just picks the slang up from school cos he hasn't got anything else to do. Yeah, i'm sure his English teacher is very proud of him lol
