Has the white flag been raised?
An interesting comment from a Sydney journalist on the subject of music sharing.

Probably a good thing as it is the music industry are the ones who have killed the golden goose by chasing after 3 year old's and people who are dead like they have in the US. Also go Creative for not supporting their long suffering customers with their crap drivers for their sound cards

I don't see what the big deal is with music... It's just music! I personally can't stand it. Especially the whole heavy metal and rock fans (No offence anyone) But seriously, what does music help you achieve
knowledge wise... apart from young kids with bad language!

k9, no offence, but that comment just floors me. Are you referring to modern music only, or the entire musical tradition?
Most of the modern stuff turns me off too, I admit. Although I have bought albums by The Killers and Interpol.

I had Limewire for a while and the collection, after culling, came to about 300 songs. That would have me drawn and quartered by the record industry, but as a result of file sharing I actually added to my CD collection, buying 15-20 albums that I wouldn't have bought otherwise. Neither side in this argument has said anything about this 'transfer effect'
but I couldn't be the only one who's done this.
BTW - as far as buying songs online I've found emusic pretty good. Their pop music range is very limited, but they cover ambient/electronic and classical music very well.

I agree with you Paul I used to use Limewire and Kazaa and downloaded music then have gone out and bought the whole album. Now I dont bother with P2P downloads as some of the sound is not very good and I prefer to have the discs as back up in case of a drive going down. I have 77.6 gigs of music and the CD's to go with what I have on hard drive, I also do not compress the files as I have good sound card and speaker system and want to hear music at its best and much of the P2P stuff is MP3.

Don't get me wrong, music is great if it isn't taken too far. I'm sure we've all met those rockers who are into self harming. They disgust me! Musical tradition, go for it, keep producing those CD's! Oh yeah... most of it's all downloadable now. (Yawn) Oh well, it is cheaper.
Ha! I don't even own an MP3 player... or an ipod. So much for that... As for how many gigs of it i own... 0, obviously.
Ps. How much spare time do you have to listen to all that music you download! Must take forever!
-
Time to listen to it all? Good question. A music collection is like a library. You have your favourites, your occasional listens, and the once-only Hell! Did I pay money for that?
With my vinyl collection added to my CD and computer collection I probably have 200-250 albums in all. But that's been built up over thirty years, remember.

Ah yes, so how many do you listen to now, that you listened to 30 years ago? Why don't you save the space for music you will actually listen to... I guess they're okay for those long car journeys
