Yes, you've got it right. College is between the end of school and University.

    dumb subordinate
Your previous boss must have had his work cut out for him then. Ha ha...

When you say "fishing letters" you do mean "lots" of letters, don't you? First time i read it, i took it literally.

    So how was the interview?

"Fishing letter" is my term for a letter sent to a firm not advertising for staff. I don't usually bother with resumes in that situation. All I'm saying is, here I am and this is what I can do.
Bombed out on a job at a pet goods wholesaler yesterday. Nice place, reasonably accessible by bus and they seemed like nice people too. Bugger. Losing out with a firm like that hurts a bit, and it did weaken my confidence. But it works both ways. I have said no thanks to prospective employers after the interview too, so sauce for the goose, etc. And when I stop to consider my work history I'm probably doing no worse than I have done in the past. Fishing letters used to be my standard strategy for finding a new job and I'd think nothing of sending out twenty or thirty letters. The rate of response was very low; few firms would take the trouble to call or send a letter saying 'nothing right now', but it was only a few. Overall, the ratio of letters out to answers in would have been 10:1 or maybe even 20:1.
I found a job advertised yesterday that I will absolutely have to apply for. It's at the UWA Bookshop. Which is located directly below my old job on the ground floor! Landing that would be a laugh and a half.

EDIT - Do you realise that this is the second most-viewed thread after the Random Thread? God, what are people going to do with their time when I find a job and there's nothing more to say?

Good luck on the UWA bookshop job Paul nothing like having a laugh at others misfortune when they are shivering in their boots wondernig when and where the axe is going to fall, rather like watching a posh gentleman treading in trying to wipe it off his shoe without any seeing him

They won't have any trouble checking my references anyhow.
Just to give you an idea of how wildly the employment situation has changed around here: I was working in office supplies ten years ago and one of the local wholesalers advertised a position in the warehouse. They got 240 replies off one advertisment, and that was just in the first week. Today they'd probably advertise over two or three weeks using newspapers and internet and get a response one-quarter of that.

Good luck with your UWA bookshop future job!

Well, since this thread is basically about people looking for a job- and moaning about crummy bosses... we'll just have to wait for someone else to share their job hunting with us... ... ...

Has anyone noticed how interested we all are in trying to find people a new job.

It is nice to be able to take interest in other people and be able to give moral support to others. This site is rather like an extended family supporting others whether it is advice on solving PC problems or supporting and receiving support in other matters, even though we are anonymous it feels like we know each other and care about each other, even if we are separated by half the world.

That is completely true bootneck! We all care about each other here, even those who don't really get along that well. In a way, i guess we are like an extended family as you say, an extended family who can't really name each other by face. I love this place! I feel like i know you all so well!

If my experience at RedBubble is any guide, it's the absence of politics that keeps DAL friendly. A big argument broke out in the forums back in February, turned very nasty. I've noticed myself that some people aren't commenting on my work as often as they used to, or not at all. And at least one comment I made on a picture months ago was deleted shortly after the eruption.
That said, I joined a group which had a couple of prominent members who had put the opposite point of view to mine, and they welcomed me into that group like an old friend. Humans - so bloody confusing.

When you say argument, it wasn't one between me and DevilsAdvocate was it? I think that one was a bit more towards Christmas way... Ours always end up getting out of control... i feel i always lose too somehow.

I try to talk to as many people as possible on DAL, but sometimes posts get forgotten if different people post more, and that one on its own gets forgotten...

I think that happened with one of Jephree's posts. Something about Edward Lorenz i recall from memory, and one of yours "Global warming nyahnyahnyah..." Oooh, such a selection to schoose from; from the forgotten posts.

??? The argument I'm referring to was on the other forum. And there's no censoring over there, either.
