    Our bushfires

Here it is only spring and we have bushfires everywhere. I'm fine where we are but this shot was taken overlooking our state capital city last night by someone who lives there.

Thats an amazing photo, is that a normal sight to you guys then? It looks like the city has been blitzed, very surreal.

when i went to australia in july, i could see the extent of the bushfires in victoria, up in the grampians. the damage these fires cause is immense and nothing can really stop them once they are going. when i was there it was 4-5 months after the fire and it was an eery feeling looking at all the burnt trees.

No its not something we've seen in a long time here. The mountains behind the city are mainly bush and a few farms. Most of the population is down near the water.
It does look surreal though. We had a fire out of control 10 minutes from here but the wind was taking it the other way thank goodness.
I think its going to be a very bad year for fires.

I visted my uncle and aunt in Hobart in January of last year. It was my first visit to Tasmania and I travelled across to Strachan to see Macquarie Harbour; after fifteen years in Perth the greenness of the state made quite an impression. I'm sorry to hear that you've been hit by bushfires this early in the season - judging from the news reports I heard during the week you were very lucky, Tassie. Firefighters were telling how the fire jumped ahead of them again and again.
That photo reminds of the fires in the Dandenong Ranges 40 years ago. We had a clear view of them from our house - we were a safe distance away, nearly ten miles. But I recall seeing the hills lit up by fires at night.
