    Hi,

I always thought that the 'lurker' term was a highly offensive term for people who benefit from forum advice without contributing. I dont think this is a particularly pleasant way to address people who might become useful contributors.

When a newcomer visits your site you have no knowledge whatsoever about how that person behaves in other forums or what their future contributions are likely to be.

Go to the Sitepoint forum and see how friendly they are there, everyone is welcomed on to the site with supportive emails, posts etc!

I am now wishing that I had NOT made a donation to this forum.

Please remove this offensive term from my profile!

    Hey,

Well that's your interpretation of the term, it's not meant to be offensive, in fact I could think of far ore offensive terms I could put on your profile.

"Lurker" generally means someone who takes advice and information from the community but does not participate in the discussion. The "Lurker" term is only in place until you have 25 posts at which point it changes to show you are an active member here.

I always try to look after our members here though as best as possible and I have taken your comments and changed the term to "Newbie" I do hope you don't also find this offensive.

Go to the Sitepoint forum and see how friendly they are there"
Why don't you take the time to meet the members here and you will see how friendly they are as well!

Thanks for the donation it will help support the site and keep us as the number one provider of computer help on the net

Thank you for the apology, although I do find your comment that you could put far more offensive terms on my profile very strange. I will assume that you simply wrote this in haste without thinking.

I look forward to meeting some friendly people on this forum.

    Best regards

Thank you Claire, I look forward to contributing on this forum. I was a bit wound up as I have a new computer that won't behave and I am stuck between vendors, software suppliers and driver options plus customers who need some complex CAD work like yesterday - so I was not in the mood for the above sort of comments.

I have been programming since 1965 (mostly machine code to solve complex eigenvalue problems in large numeric arrays for dynamic aerospace structures) so you may understand why I found the term offensive.

    Thank you for the welcome.
