Depends what for. A few months ago, I bought myself a new laptop at home. Great for doing stuff in the lounge or in the garden or even in bed but, as you rightly pointed out, usually a hassle to upgrade. I doubled the RAM as soon as I got it - that was easy enough. But now I need a bigger hard disk. I've aquired a second disk but have nowhere to put it so I'm going to have to fork out for a USB caddy to plug it in the back. Would have been much easier if I had a desktop PC. However, I've just ordered my wireless router so, when I've got my 2Mb broadband ANYWHERE in the house or garden, then it will REALLY be worth having a laptop

Have had a laptop at work for years - can't beat it for taking some work into a meeting room to plug into a big screen and show a group of people or for going out on-site to see a client.

yes, a laptop is better if you need to travel, my sister now only has 1 working usb port on her laptop, this is used for the modem, all-in-one printer, usb storage drive and digital camera
she would have to pay £50 for a card that plugs into the side of her laptop (she doesnt want one of those usb hubs because shewants something more perminant) but wit a desktop, it would cost about £5-10 por a pci card

but she needs a laptop because she takes it to uni and childrens houses that she teaches and next year hopefully) she will have a job as a proper teacher so she will need it then

Edit: she is getting a new one soon
