    Have you searched for Pilot tools? I know that Pilots and Co-Pilots use the web to create their flight plans.

    Depends, what Country/County/City... Actually Country is the most important.

    Anyway, what your looking for is a Geographical Information System (GIS) Map. Some developed countries have them... I would google your County, Country, and GIS (or your dialects equivalent to GIS) also some census bureaus provide GIS maps.

    Talk about making a simple thing difficult. This and this do exactly what I need, albeit with only the first half of the post code.

    The AA site I believe is more for route planning rather than as the crow flies but the pilot tools is a excellent tip which I will look into some more.

    the AA tells you the total distance traveled at each stage (if you get me) and then an overall total at the bottom

    yeah space cowby was looking for a "how the bird fly's" distance and not driving distance.
