Bethesda Students Join Earth Hour Environmental Campaign - washingtonpost.com

Sitting in the Dark All for a Good Cause

-- So what will you be doing at 8:30 on Saturday night?

The World Wildlife Fund hopes that you'll be sitting in the dark, observing Earth Hour.

What is Earth Hour? It's an attempt by the environmental group to get people, businesses, governments and organizations to turn off the lights for an hour to make a statement against global warming.

Around the world, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Colosseum in Rome will be dark. And in Washington, the Washington National Cathedral and the National Geographic Society headquarters will turn off their lights.

A group of local kids is getting involved, too. More than 100 students at Bethesda's Bannockburn Elementary School created an Earth Hour Quilt. They also sent a letter asking President Barack Obama to turn off the lights at the White House for Earth Hour. To see their quilt and learn more about Earth Hour, visit earthhourkids.org.

The White House has not indicated if its lights will be dimmed.

Is it just me because I somehow feel that Earth Hour is too "simple" to actually have any impact. It seems more like a publicity stunt or for people to ease their own guilt.

I faintly remember being told that flipping switches on and off consumes more energy than just leaving it on. And what specifically is Earth Hour attempting to achieve?

I'd be more than happy to join but it just seems too simple to be good.
