I hate the way Windows XP looks! But I'm a "techie"! Many IT people would agree with me that Windows XP is a pain in the a*** to get used to - they've moved everything around. Why? It made sense in Windows 2000. Now you have to go through some ridiculous task-based prompts and poncey colourful menus (that you can only see bits of 'cos Windows is hiding the options it doesn't think you'll be very interested in) to find what you're looking for. I KNOW WHAT I WANT TO RUN - JUST PUT IT BACK WHERE IT USED TO BE!!
The other techie reason that I hate XP is that Microsoft try very hard to protect you from doing anything that they consider to be dangerous. This is great for most users when it's working OK - Windows XP SP2 won't let you run anything or do anything that might break it...... or use most of the Internet because it thinks you can't be trusted not to get a virus or something. So you can't fiddle with stuff that might cause a problem - it puts a hand up and says in a stern voice "sorry, I don't think you can be trusted to do that .... so I've hidden it from you". Unfortunately, that doesn't help IT people. Fixing computers is all about doing things that might be considered "dangerous" or "risky" and getting into those advanced tools that mean you can do whatever you want. OI, WINDOWS, LET ME SEE EVERYTHING AND DO EVERYTHING - YOU ****ED UP AND I'M TRYING TO FIX IT !!
</end rant>
Prudence seems happy to be back. She was helping me put up some big bits of trellis in the back garden this afternoon - you know, passing me the Makita when I was holding the trellis up and didn't have a spare hand to reach for it on the ground, that kind of thing. She knows the difference between all the screws now as well. That's pretty impressive. My big box of screws is sectioned into 1", 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/2", 3" and 4" lengths and all of those each come in a number 10 and a number 12, as well as a little section with 4s, 6s and 8s. But, after a little while, I could ask her for a 3 x 10 or a 2 1/2 x 12 and she'd have a little look in the box and give me exactly what I wanted - clever girl
Did anyone see you put the wallet in the safe? Is there still time to get it back? - that 64-bit version of XP won't be cheap!

djnafey isnt there an option to put it on classic view
-
yeah click start button then right click it and properties, then click the rasdio button classic view, and press apply
-
Yes, you're right but that only deals with the Start Menu - I don't think there's much of an answer to the rest of it other than make everyone a Network Administrator and set all security settings to 'Off' - yeah, great idea, lol!

Prudence, Prudence, Where fore art thou Prudence?!?! You fur so soft, and fluffy...and shedded! All I am left for your memory is wool all over my house and yard...

i thaught your main gripe was the start menu, ah well im wrong again. ive never liked XP, or ME, if only we could go back to the days of 95 or 3.1

set you start menu and theme back to classic and you get most of what you want. 2000 was nice, but it didnt like some of the newer tech I mess with. XP works with it better. I will say that I still prefer my Dos7/Win3.11 machine and Linux box. Both run faster and more stable than either 2k or XP. Granted, my apps I use for Dos7 are very dated, they still diagnose the problems on my network at work faster and better than the "Modern" tools that my Tech directory wants me to use.
At home, my Linux box is now wired to 21 houses on a WAN and its the sole DNS for the 37 machines wired into it. I have been experimenting with WAN and LAN setups and talked afew of my neighbors into this setup. 3 have satellite and 2 have 1/2Ts. With some help (I still dont understand it all but learning) we bonded the 5 sources into 1 big pipe that we all share. The 3 satellite systems use the Linux box as a network Modem and the 1/2Ts use it as a router for the other systems. This being done on a P3 650 box with 768mb main ram and a 20gig HD...you should see that box chug!
