Schools and useless PCs?
My school has recently had three ICT suites replaced with brand new XP computers, but of course some old Windows 98 PCs remain which have been there for quite some years. I decided to take a look at the spyware, etc on the PC and it was quite horrendous, lots of common spyware. Then I took a look at Windows Update. This quite shocked me, see here. I'm guessing it is the same for every PC.

i dont get it, what shocked you?

43 Windows 98 Updates and 9 Critical Updates and Service Packs
-
35 lanuage packs for 98, so only 8 recommended and 9 crit. Not a big deal. Most 98s are like that.
-
9 critical are a big deal though. They should be patched up, thats why the system was full of spyware. I won't speak for the 98 bit, but I'll speak for the security side
-
98 has some many holes in it for security...Dont get me wrong, I love 98 because its almost the last bit of DOS left, but you are right. The Crits should be taken care of when possible. Still, they are better than the 98s I found here when I started this job, the company had 14 to 16 98s that didnt even have a IE Service pack update.

But so do all OS's. A lot of people are still attached to 98, because as you said, the last decent DOS based OS. Me is built on DOS, but of course hardly anybody uses it. That OS was rushed out too quick and was way too buggy. I'm quite suprised at how long 98 has survived, just shows how good an OS is was in its time (and still is to some). Windows 98 is like a more advanced version of 95. And how many people are using 95 now? Probably way less than 1% of PC users, only a tiny few. 10 years old 95 is now, and thats what started it all.
You can tell when using 2000 that its the foundations of Windows XP. Both NT based as you probably know.
It shocked me, because the Administrator at our school said "He couldn't fix the PCs" so they are hiring someone for £40 an hour to sort out the PCs and he comes every Friday if I'm not mistaken. They both did a good job didn't they if nearly all of the PCs were infested with spyware and a lack of critical updates.
