yes it can and some versions can be used from usb disk and moved around with the user without having fixed work stations

i just want to know how and where i can get the Linux that
    linux comes in different flavours

    red hat
    mandrake(mandriva)
    ubuntu
    suse
    etc.......

    Linux Torvalds.<<<<<<<<<<<< creator of ~Linux
    ???????

the best linux to use at the moment is ubuntu which is free for most applications

all comes down to what you want to do with it.
    for business applications?
how may people are going to be using what you create.

    Linux facts
    1. open source (modify it any way)
    2. no purchase costs (free)

    Linux draw backs
    1. still Support costs.
    2. time taken to make changes can be large(even to make simple changes) even if you know what your doing.

    My honest opinion
    an alternative to windows yes

    Small changes are possible

however if you have no experience of programming then heavily customising linux is going to take you years to learn.
and even then isnt probally going to get the desired results you want.

windows has thousands of people on new versions of windows for years.
Linux is the same however people from all the globe colaborate and help each other make changes and test functionality.(open source).

open source code cannot be resold after you make modifications to it.
