    Custom reolution (force resolution) Ubuntu

I have a 50in HDTV and Ubuntu shows my resolution as 1280x720 but I know it's a 1080p but on my Windows I have the resolution set as something lower because I use it as my primary monitor. So Ubuntu shows it as 1280x720 and 1920x1080 but it's too big I can't see it from so far away. How do I edit my config so I can make custom resolutions I have 1192 by something on my windows I want that resolution in my ubuntu as it's perfect size for looking at the tv from across the room.

if you have your graphics card driver installed, use the manufacturer's utility which ubuntu can (sometimes) install with the driver. for instance, if you have an nvidia card, install the driver and use the nvidia utility which will appear in administration or preferences or some such. from there you can use the slider just like in windows.
i have recently uninstalled ubuntu, but i remember being able to adjust my resolution from preferences under system when it was installed, with a slider. so i'm confused as to why you can't adjust the resolution.
