Ubuntu Help Resources
My apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum. Mods please move if needed.
As a way of helping users make the switch to Ubuntu I decided to make up a small page of links that will help them make the transition.
Ubuntu Help and Documentation - This is a page from Ubuntu that can help you with many questions like adding software, security, music and photos, customizing your desktop and much more;
https://help.ubuntu.com/
Adding Codecs and Fonts - Start at the Repository Howto and follow the instructions to add extra repositories that will make available many codes including the w32 and w64 codecs, DVD codecs, Windows fonts, AAC codec and much more. A must for having the ability to view wmv and DVD files;

Linux Software Equivalents - You started using Linux and now you see all these strange software names. Or you have a favorite piece of Windows software and would like to use something similar in Linux. Well here's a page that has Windows software titles listed and the equivalent Linux software.

Ubuntu 4 You - A bit of shameless promotion of my own blog. LOL! Here you will find many articles to help you with problems in Ubuntu plus numerous articles on software that may be overlooked. It is geared towards both the beginner and advanced user.

Office Suite - Open Office that comes preinstalled in Ubuntu is as good as any Windows Office Suite. Not only do you have a word processor but also a spreadsheet and a powerpoint style presentation creator. It also comes with plenty of templates that will expand your abilities to create professional documents and spreadsheets. And it can also be used by Microsoft users who can't afford the Microsoft suite.
I urge you to take a look at their site and see all the goodies available to you with this suite.
(Sounded like a commercial, eh? LOL!!)

And finally some tips on how to do some Google searching that will cut out the clutter.
Lets say you have a problem with the Nvidia video driver in Hardy Heron. Open up Google and type this in the search box;
Hardy Nvidia Problem
That will bring up results with Hardy and Nvidia in them.
Also, you can type in your search terms and add either the version you have like Ibex or Hardy or even just Linux. This gets you the results that are geared towards those OS's. Not 100% effective but does cut down on the useless junk.
And 1 more tip. When using Google, try using the Blog search. I am finding that many blogs contain a wealth of info and take less time finding an answer then a wading through a whole website.
Good luck and enjoy!
