dvd error-"can't read from resource"
Well I'll post this as a shot in the dark. On my Ubuntu 8.04 O/S running Mplayer and Gxine withe libdvdrs4 and inserting a movie when Mplayer opens to play the movie I get an error message "Can't read from resource". Anybody got any ideas? Oh, and it reads cd files just fine and burns iso's just fine. Just no DVD.

Didn't like the part in the 1st link about when he installed libdvdcss that the movie opened and then computer crashed. When I installed Gxine it includes all the apps needed to run it. which means those apps should apply to Movie Player also unless I'm mistaken. Wouldn't be the 1st time I'm mistaken.

Well Jephree, tried installing libdvdcss2 in terminal and no such package availabe in the long run after a bunch of info lines with 0 packages installed, 0 upgraded, blah blah blah. I guess its not available anymore.

All I can add is browsing the last Google search I posted. Most appear similar. re: libdvdcss2

Shoot dude, I maybe should try a different dvd maybe. I can listen to music on both drives, read data cd's, even burn iso's. I went to terminal and typed in a bunch of commands having to do with playing dvd's in Hardy Heron off the one link ya gave me but I haven't got into synaptic package manager yet to see what got installed there since I did that. Will update ya later cuz ya know how much work it takes to install software in linux when ya get down too it. From the looks of it Linux is scared of copywrite infringement when it comes to codecs I guess. We'll see after further research and searching through my apt-get packages.

well installed dvdcss2 and now I don't get the "Can't read resource error". Now it goes into play, shows streaming on bottom task bar of player, then boom goes to pause. Hit play again with same results. Thought I was close.

You won't believe how I got this to work. I downloaded a different player (VLC) from synaptic package manager and installed the software. Its a different media player. Movie opened right up and played using that player. Figured I would let everybody know. Now just have to take out MPLAYer and GXINE player and try to make VLC open DVD's automaticallY. Right now default player is M Player. I have to open VLC manually and open disk for the movie to play for right now. Thanks Bro, for all the help.

Update # 2: Now have gxine as default player and movie opens up and plays in both DVD drives. VLC only works with IBM DVDRW drive. M Player shows drive as cdrom, not dvdrw, or on the other drive it also shows up as cdrom, instead of cdrw/dvdrom. No wonder movies won't play in M Player because M Player identifies my drives as just cdrom's. So long story short, DVD's play in gxine both drives. VLC only plays DVD in 1 drive. M Player no go.
