considering changing to linux. advice plz?

I just got the Ubuntu 7.10 CD. i used it from the cd drive and most of my drivers work. i like ubuntu alot.

    my system specs:
    Windows XP SP3
    AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+ (2.20GHz)
    960MB of RAM
    160 GB HDD

    4 partitons:
    1 fat32 - win XP -
    1 ntfs - win xp - english
    1 ntfs - store files
    1 ntfs - empty

Question: Can I install Ubuntu on the empty ntfs partition and still keep my other two OS??

I've read that Ubuntu requires ext3? How do I go abt doing that?

Key thing is that I want my other 2 OS to remain. Cos I dont really have a way to backup my data and re-install my entire system.

The ubuntu installer gives you an option where to install, so yes, i think you can. I had it on a PC dual booting Ubuntu and XP
Go and leap into the big cosy world of a community supported OS!!!!

No. NTFS is a Windows File System.

The partition will be reformatted as well as repartitioned as Ubuntu creates two partitions on install.

Can you do it? Yes; but that partition will be reformatted.

If you want to make easy put it on it's own hard drive. That way xp should be ok. You will be able to boot to xp or linux with the boot loader. Hard drives are not too costly.
