    How to connect to the internet...

    I have Ubuntu running on a compaq computer with an AMD processor. The computer has a 56K modem in a PCI slot. I have everything running nicely and am enjoying all the office software. I now need to get on the net. Can anyone guide me through the process of getting it running? Thanks. John

    PPPoE Modems

    * Internet and Networks
    * ADSL Modems

    This section is about setting up an ADSL Internet connection using an ethernet PPPoE modem.

    You will require a subscription with an Internet Service Provider, and an installed, functional Internet connection. Most modems have a light which will be lit if it is currently connected to the Internet. You will also need your username and password for the Internet account.

    * 4.2.1. Setting up PPPoE
    * 4.2.2. Starting the connection
    * 4.2.3. Stopping the connection

    4.2.1. Setting up PPPoE

    To set up the modem:

    1.

    Open a terminal (Applications ▸ Accessories ▸ Terminal)
    2.

    In the terminal, type

    sudo pppoeconf

    3.

    A text-based menu program will guide you through the following steps:

    1. Confirm that your Ethernet card is detected.
    2. Enter your username.
    3. Enter your password.
    4. If you already have a PPPoE Connection configured, you will be asked if it may be modified.
    5. Popular options: you are asked if you want the “noauth” and “defaultroute” options and to remove “nodetach”. Choose Yes.
    6. Use peer DNS - choose Yes.
    7. Limited MSS problem - choose Yes.
    8. When you are asked if you want to connect at start up, you will probably want to say yes.
    9. Finally you are asked if you want to establish the connection immediately.

    4.

    Once you have finished these steps, your connection should be working.

    4.2.2. Starting the connection

    To start your ADSL connection on demand, in a terminal (Applications ▸ Accessories ▸ Terminal) type:

    sudo pon dsl-provider

    4.2.3. Stopping the connection

    To stop your ADSL connection, in a terminal (Applications ▸ Accessories ▸ Terminal) type:

    sudo poff dsl-provider

    Often parts of ADSL USB modem drivers are proprietary, closed source software and so cannot be supplied with Ubuntu. To get a modem to work with these drivers, you will need to download files from Internet with a computer having a working connection, then transfer the downloaded files to you Ubuntu installation.

    If you have a modem that can connect both via USB and ethernet, or an ethernet router, you should use the ethernet connection.

    USB modem installation will require Internet access to download the necessary proprietary drivers. Configuration is beyond the scope of this guide; please see the links to the relevant installation instructions on the Ubuntu community help site, below.

    To identify model of your modem, note the name and number on the front. You may have to look for a label to discover the exact model. Consult the list below to see which driver your modem requires, and note the link.

    When you go online to download the necessary drivers, you can download the relevant drivers using the links provided.

    These are all the help files I could find for different hookups from wireless to different modems. I hope this helps you out. Whats weird is my Ubuntu 8.04 with the modem connected and turned on while I did my permanent install automatically went into asking for ppoe and stmp info while I was doing my install and after that internet and Evolution Email worked from the getgo.

    I will try and plow through what you sent me. I have a connection to the internet using my laptop. I have dial-up as I live in the woods. 56k is the best I can do here. My two computers are not networked. Each is stand alone. If I need a file, I get it via my laptop and pass it to the linux computer via a flash drive.

    I was hoping that connecting with Linux was as easy as connecting with windows. Answer a couple of questions and it all works.

    Are you saying that there are no drivers for modems in Ubuntu and that I have to get one off the net?

    My modem has the name SMART Modular Technologies, Inc. written on the board. Does that help.

    Identifying your modem

    * Internet and Networks
    * Modems

    Most dialup modems are not supported by Ubuntu, but drivers can be found that will enable the use of some such modems. First you need to identify what chipset your dialup modem is:

    1.

    Download scanmodem (http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz) using a computer with an Internet connection.

    2.

    Copy the downloaded file to the Home folder of the computer with the dialup modem you wish to use.

    3.

    Open a Terminal (Applications ▸ Accessories ▸ Terminal) and type the following commands, pressing Return after each line:

    gunzip -c scanModem.gz > scanModem
    chmod +x scanModem
    sudo ./scanModem
    gedit Modem/ModemData.txt

    4.

    A file containing information on the chipsets used by any detected modems should open. Print or save the information.

    Much more detailed information is available on the community wiki.

    From what I am gathering studying this is that You hookup your other computer to your modem and download the scanmodem link I provided to a file in your windows computer. Load file in pen drive. install file in your John documents folder or even desktop and then follow the terminal instructions for gunzip on down to make sure your modem will work with Ubuntu. Then use my 3rd post to install. Ubuntu works a bit different than windows because it wants you to act like the Administrator and any changes made to your computer is then only done and approved by you. Like I said when I did my install with a blank hardrive I had my modem connected and on When I installed O/S and everything went flawlessly. Only problem I have had so far is installing old lexmark z 45 printer that Ubuntu considers a paperweight in there hardware compatibilty site. You might try something like Puppy Linux Live because that O/S works excellant with dialup andWill store on USB device. Just a thought,not a strong suggestion. I*'ll go to the hardware compatability site and see if I can find your modem there.
