I have a desktop computer that I want to dedicate to Linux. I want to rid if of XP all together and install Linux. Is there a good place on the net to get this kind of install information? I guess I should also ask what Linux should I install. Should I buy one or download from some site.

You can partition your drive and have a dual boot with XP but if you really want to erase XP Killdisk will take care of that:
