Dual Boot Windows XP Home & Ubuntu Linux

    Hi,
I have got ubuntu on a cd.
I have got an old pc with a 60 GB hard drive with Windows Xp Home on it.
I decided I wanted to have this pc as a dual boot pc with Ubuntu & Xp Home.
I booted from the cd, partitined the Xp Home into 20GB and allotted 35GB for Ubuntu.
    I then installed Ubuntu.
It looked like everything was going well.
The install took about 1 hour and 10 minutes.
After the install was finished, I clicked restart now.
The pc rebooted and I got the GRUB menu.
Ubuntu was first on the list, I clicked return.
The ubuntu symbol came up on the screen and the progress bar was below it, the progress bar started and only moved a tiny amount.
The pc did nothing for a few minutes.

Then I got this screen - please find it attached.

Please does anyone know what the problem is and how do I remedy this situation?

If it is relevent here are the specs of the pc I used:
    256MB RAM
    60GB Hard Drive

Hmm, which CD did you use to partition? Ubuntu or XP?
If you used XP, then I'd reccomend using the Ubuntu disc to do it.

Was this a thingy disc - urm... one of those which you can also use ubuntu without installing? If not, is it the right one - 32 or 64bit.

    hi Paul,
    I got the ubuntu here:
    http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

These are the options I choose:

    Ubuntu 7.10 - Supported to 2009

Standard personal computer (x86 architecture, PentiumTM, CeleronTM, AthlonTM, SempronTM)

I have since wiped the hard drive and installed ubuntu as a single os.

The exact same problem is still there.

modprobe is a command used to add or remove modules from the kernel.

I would suggest that you download and burn on a cd at lower speed, do (4x).
Also be sure to verify the checksum of your download using md5sum.

    256MB RAM
    60GB Hard Drive

    Pentium 4 processor

I coped the ubuntu iso onto a cd again, this time at *3 speed --
exactly the same problem. It seems this problem is rampant with ubuntu installs. I think the partitions are not set up properly or something.

I have since installed the excellent PcLinuxOS 2007 on the pc in question -
not a single problem. It has a html tutorial on its desktop that explains in detail how to partition the hdd. It deals with a swap (double your ram) and two other larger partitions (ext3).

I have not given up on ubuntu yet - just stuck.

Hmm, when you burnt this new one at a lower speed, was it the same file? Maybe the file that you downloaded is corrupt in one place.... Best thing is to request some free CDs . You can even run ubuntu from that disc, and run the partitioner from ubuntu.

That is why I suggested to verify the checksum of your download using md5sum.

Anyway: PCLinuxOS2007 is a better distro, I gave up on Ubuntu after tring without success to connect to my wireless network: I loaded PCLinuxOS2007 and click, click, click .....I was connected.
