I am ready getting to know linux.
I have installed Ubuntu on an old pc.
I have got it to dual boot with windows xp home.
The question is though about freeware for linux - where is the best site[s] to get it from?

I am so used to windows xp that and its software.

Are all downloads for linux compatible with all distros?

I am a real novice at linux but want to learn more about it.
