my sister is about to buy her first pc(for under £40) it comes with monitor and is installed with linux, it's intel pen 111, 128 ram, 500mhz, with 10 gb hard drive, it has usb, graphic card etc, she is only going to use it to browse and email. but the thing is that it has no dial up modem.

what i would like to know is, should i be looking for a certain type of modem and if so which one, and roughly how much would they cost.

any help would be much appreciated.

For that price and spec, it will be very old and you may not have any graphics, usb, monitor etc and hardware support in Linux for it. Linux is also not the beginners choice or suitability for OS at all, and you should be looking over at Windows to be honest. Linux is command prompt based and more difficult to navigate with much harder to find, expertize required to run it.

Which distro of Linux does it have installed?

Any h/ware or modem should be compatible with the Linux distro you have installed or it won't work basically.

cheers for the advice, my sister has decided not to buy the pc with linux.

she has paid £26 for a small desktop unit, gateway E1600. intel celeron 800mhz, 256 ram, 10gb hard drive and comes with win 2000. but it has no modem, so will look for an external modem for her, and as far as i know ther is no graphics card, is a graphic card just for pc games?, if so she wont bother with one, or is it essential that you have one?
