Getting mic on logitec webcam to work

    Hi all,
dual boot, XP and Ubuntu. Love ubuntu, have been using for a few months. I just installed Skype, using it often in XP. However, I can't get my webcam/ mic to register in ubuntu. it's a logitech, cheapo webcam (got free from my ISP i think, I know I didnt' buy it). but it works fine in XP. Any ideas? I have no experience with Wine, if that's what i need, but i might be able to figure it out. However it seems that there should be a linux driver for this thing. I just want to be able to talk to folks using it. Also posting in ubuntu forums but no luck yet.
thanks all, this forum has been helpful to me since before i built my first computer; certainly had a LOT of questions then! (now i know more, and that just means I have more questions.)
    regards
    karinne

    Are you verby here?

I am just learning Ubuntu. I doubt that Wine (Windows emulator) will help in this issue but to install it (if you haven't) go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager > Cross Platform (universe) > wine

I don't have anything at the moment to add to your particular problem but will look around.

no, but thanks for the redirect. I'm wallacek there, too.

I spend plenty of time in the ubuntu newbies forum! They've helped me with lots of stuff. Are you an ubuntu fan thus far? I am, but I still use XP most of the time; a lot of my computer time is design and analysis work. I can run Matlab in ubuntu but I haven't been able to run AutoCAD (2 or 3 D), SolidWorks, or Pro-E (all 'home' versions, not site licenses) on it thus far.

The webcam I just want for Skype, it would be very nice to have but it's not essential. More essential are these issues: getting my ubuntu box to see my other XP Pro box on my network (2 comp network through Belkin router to cable modem; i'm not a networking expert but i can generally get the two boxes to see each other when both are logged on in XP, but then sometimes that won't work either. My network skills consist of "try this and see if it works".) and also finding a way to run the modeling programs in ubuntu.

thanks again, any help is appreciated. Are you in Edgy, or still Dapper Drake? I'm running Dapper Drake and don't plan to upgrade for a while.

    I'm using Edgy.

I am just a stand alone computer just using Firefox and Evolution E-mail and Open Office.

In other words my needs are very basic and easily satisfied.

I am following you posts at Ubuntu Forums.

Unfortunately I have nothing at this point to offer on your present issues,

Will pass along anything of interest that I might come across.

    Are you using Ubuntu 6.06?

Linux makes its own drivers which are usually installed after installation, as it detects hardware, automatically. Your device manufacturer may also supply drivers for use with Linux, you'll have to check that.

Third parties are developing drivers for Linux based systems now. For instance this driver: http://www.ee.oulu.fi/~tuukkat/quickcam/quickcam.html

It depends on your make/model what your after and if its developed out there.

    How yours installation working anyway?
Mine buggered up when choosing the partition as I already had 4 partitions correctly formatted as FAT32, and also don't want the grub to take over the Win MBR, as I've seen many users loose their Win installation along with Ubuntu of it messes up. Uninstallation can be a pain on it.
