okay, when i was in school, we were given these external hardrives to transport work from class to class, the only computer types used on this thing was a mac! and now that i have a G4 at home, i was wanting to transport the work-- but it will not mount on this computer. any ideas? thanks

To use an external firewire drive you must use a firewire lead and insert it into the firewire port on your mac. To know if you have this, the port will have the firewire logo next to it. It can be confused with a USB port because they do look the same (but operate differently).

Every Mac comes with FireWire connections (known as i.LINK on Sony computers). You should have 2 USB ports and 2 FireWire ports. However, you may need the software that came with your external drive for it to work. Contact the manufacturer if you are unable to get the original disk.They should allow you to download it from their site. You can obtain a FireWire cable from most computer stores. To check your connections, on OS10:
Go to Applications - Utilities - System Profiler

The System Profiler will give details of all the devices on your computer and the drivers. It will advise what is connected on the USB ports and the FireWire ports (if anything).
